| 12.28.06 | Netflix | This movie was Carpenter's feature debut... two years before Assault on Precinct 13. The DVD production notes say that the movie started out as a student film, then got $60K funding, and was flushed into a full-length movie. It's basically about 4 hippyish astronauts travelling around blowing up unstable planets. Most of the astronauts are bored with their jobs. The movie is deliberately-paced, but was interesting enough that I never felt bored. One of the actors, Dan O'Bannon, went on to write all of the Alien films (including AVP). The Netflix sleeve calls it a brillaint parody of 2001. I don't know if I'd go that far, but the final sequence involved the astronauts' attempt to talk a self-aware bomb out of blowing everybody up. Definitely not for everybody (it's very different that most other Carpenter films), but I liked it. |
