The idea quickly gained traction, and several people from Austin and Dallas opted in. I've done Pseudo-BNATs for the past 3 years on the weekend of BNAT itself, but since my wife was out of town this weekend, the group decided to hold the event this weekend. Even up until the morning of, I was half-expecting that everyone would bail and that I'd be watching a movie marathon by myself. But as it turns out, everybody who said they would come ended up showing, including two people from Austin. So the end result was a completely badass marathon with like-minded movie geeks. Here's the livetweets from the entire event... http://reeldistraction.com/?action=viewNews&docID=1679 ... and here's slightly expanded thoughts on the event. So I slept in really late. I woke up around 11 am and spent the next two hours running around. I needed to hang up several of my new Mondo Tees posters, then needed to hit Premiere Video to get my pick for the night, then needed to grab lunch. Right as I got home from all of that, @noahphex showed up. I gave him my copy of the BTS-edited MOVIE '77 magazine, then jumped in the shower. When I got out, @zombiefreak had arrived. A few minutes later, @BTSJunkie showed up with a crapload of awesome beer. @Chasewhale called to say that he was running late, so we decided to start the first movie without him. First up was a @zombiefreak pick, Brain Slasher (aka Mindwarp). I was vaguely aware of this movie, but couldn't have told you anything about it. But hot damn... this was an excellent film and a great start to the marathon. I like Edward Furlong abstractly, but really didn't like him the last time I watched T2. I thought he was great in STOIC though. And he's excellent here, as well. The movie is about a kid who gets involved with a killer video game that - in true Ender style - turns him into a killer without him realizing it. Except that he realizes it pretty quick after the first murder but decided to keep playing nonetheless. And even though he is pained about his decision and has a pretty good basis for continuing to play, we're basically asked to side with a serial killer for most of the film. Very dark. The highlight of this movie for me was T. Ryder Smith's performance as The Trickster, a Satan proxy that leads Furlong down the digital path to hell. The first time we see Trickster - when he trashes the contents of a desk and then leaps on top to play a Primus CD - his mannerisms are eerily identical to Ledger's Joker mannerisms. I would be shocked if this performance wasn't a reference for DARK KNIGHT. Smith's performance changes a bit after that first scene, but it's powerful throughout. @BTSJunkie later expressed doubts over the rewatchability of the film, but I was completely engrossed by what was going on the entire time. The movie ends with a complete cop-out, though. That was disappointing. This movie also spawned the festival's catchphrase, Furlong's buddy's somewhat pathetic (but also awesome) frequent departure question: "Buddies forever?" The guy asks that question several times during the film, and we ended up co-opting it for the rest of the night. "Buddies Forever" is BTSNAT's "Chaos Reigns." Excellent start to the night. For sake of the record's completeness, @chasewhale and his buddy Adam showed up during the middle of this movie. So for the next few films, we has six people watching, which was pretty cool. |
