| 11.06.09 | Home DVD | After Kung Fu Killers I checked out the other "extra" on the Man From Hong Kong DVD, a Brian-Trenchard Smith short film about... well... it's 97% disaster movie and 3% don't-smoke-PSA. Tweets: :: Now watching HOSPITALS DON'T BURN DOWN, a Brian Trenchard-Smith short film. http://twitpic.com/okqzl :: Spoiler: They do. #hospitalsdontburndown http://twitpic.com/okr9h :: This may be the most horrifying thing BTS ever directed. #hospitalsdontburndown :: Holy Flaming Nurses, Batman... #hospitalsdontburndown is brutal! Among Trenchard-Smith's most powerful films. http://twitpic.com/oktpq So here's the deal with this movie. Some asshole patient chunks a lit cigarette down a hatch in a hospital that leads to a basement, where it ignites a huge stack of dirty laundry. That happens in the first 5 minutes. The rest of the 30-minute runtime features nurses and doctors and patients (including people in comas and sick kids) bursting into flames and otherwise dying horrible deaths. The movie ends with a shot of the smoking asshole realizing that all the death and destruction was his fault. He freaks out, cries, and lights up another smoke before the credits roll. This was a tough film to watch. I wasn't kidding when I said it was among the most powerful movies in BTS's oeuvre. It is similar to, but completely eclipses, the numerous US large-cast disaster flicks in terms of effectiveness and sense-of-hopelessness. If you can track this down, it is worthwhile (but devastating) film to watch. As a bonus, here's some extras from the Man From Hong Kong DVD: :: Wanna see Brian Trenhard-Smith topless wearing cut-off Jean shorts? Sure ya do. http://twitpic.com/okujc :: And here's BTS, looking a bit like an Aussie Hitler: http://twitpic.com/okuy8 http://twitpic.com/okuy5 :: Who wants to make me this shirt for my birthday? @mondonews? :) http://twitpic.com/okvbe :: Having second thoughts about whether I correctly id'd BTS in those jean-shorts pictures. If I erred, I'd be so ashamed. |
